Plastic strip designed to protect the bottoms of boats which are regularly beached or trailed – like dories, RIBs, dinghies and tenders. Made from a urethane derivative called Pellethane, it’s 5in (13cm) wide and comes in a self-adhesive roll. After priming and cleaning the surface, you just stick it on for protection from all those scratches and chips which most boats accumu-late during active service. The American makers even give it a lifetime guarantee against abra-sion. Designed for use on GRP, wood, aluminium and most plastics, Keelshield comes in a range of colours and costs $22 per foot. Ready-cut lengths are also available for a little less – a 12ff (3.6m) roll, for example, can be had for $226. But always check wiht online chandlers for the best prices of maine equipment!
