Put a latch on the hatch
Having introduced their Hatch-Latch companionway security system a year or two ago, Osprey Marine have now added two more versions. Made from 316-grade stain-less steel, the original HL 1000 design is made to fit traditional style hatches with a sufficiently deep vertical face (1 %in) to accept the keeper plate. Osprey say that its special design makes it proof against thieves armed with hacksaws, crowbars, drills or bolt-cutters – which is probably why it costs around K86. Their new additions are the HL 1010 – identical to the 1000 but made in phosphor bronze for use on classic boats – and the stainless steel HL 2000, to fit acrylic sliding hatches. All three models allow the companionway to be opened and closed from below decks in compliance with ORC regula-tions. Fitted in about 20 minutes, they can be supplied on their own or with a choice of high-security padlocks which take the price up to around 5150.
