Rutgerson’s hardware for fully-battened mainsails has been widely used on boats up to 85ft (10.7m) for many years but the Swedish company realised that it was beginning to look a little dated compared with some of the more recently launched alternatives. In response, they’ve now introduced a new system which that apparently needs no bolts or stitching
through the sail. Instead, both ends of the batten and the batten cars fit into plastic domes which fasten through Rutgerson’s Super Rings. Apart from being flexible, compact, durable and easy to fit, they tell us that the new design uses round battens which can be joined together for easier storage and transport. What’s more, by connecting two different thicknesses of rod you can, in effect, make a tapered batten. Adaptors for flat battens are available. Batten tension is controlled by a screw thread on the leech, and the same system is used for the battcars – whose wheels, apparently, are made from a special anti-deformation plastic containing a molecular lubri-cant to ensure easy running. |
