The NASA Target Navtex Pro isn't new, but has come a very long way from its shaky origins of 10 years ago. We're taking a close look because in North Biscay and Mallorca other boats were receiving clear text, while my Lokata was getting nothing - which was probably something to do with NASA's pre amplified whip antenna.

I've tested the £299 Pro from an office desk, where it was set up and calibrated in a couple of minutes. It received weather forecasts and nav warnings, even though the antenna was in the middle of a building. To have a reliable Navtex will be a real step forward.
This model has an LCD screen and we won't have to fork out on fax paper - nor be woken by the chatter of the printer at 03.00 However, I still have some lingering doubts about how user-friendly a scrolling screen will be, as against hard copy. We shall know more by September.
