The Garmin Three Plus hand-held GPS is top of my list, replacing a Garmin III as our GPS back-up. Last summer, a fellow radio ham got us lost in some French mountains, but the Garmin III helped us work out where we were. This rugged little instrument is hardly cheap at £458 but it's the most versatile I've ever handled and compares well with some very pricey fIxed models. The scale of the built-in road maps provides a highly readable track history of a vehicle's progress - and you can down-load maps from a CD via a PC. You can also manipulate and store waypoints and routes, using Wmdows software. The III Plus is fast enough for instant recognition of changes in speed anddirection. All data fIelds are confIgurable, so you can, for example, show average speed and average position, maxima and minima, in addition to all the normal GPS and Go-To functions. Amazingly, in spite of the small display area, all 9 boxes on the main Navigation Page are very easy to read. Accessories include a 12 volt supply cable and the makers claim 36 hours use from 4 M batteries. Having enjoyed the Garmin III, I can't wait to get my hands on the III Plus. |
